Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
When I was about 18 a couple of friends and I went to Dallas on a Saturday to watch a Dallas Cowboys game. It was a late afternoon game and by the time it was over darkness was falling. We started heading home and had heard that a new super highway had just opened. It was Interstate 635 LBJ Freeway. We took the exit to get on it and immediately realized we had made a big mistake. They had opened it but they had not yet painted stripes on the road. We were suddenly in complete darkness with no reflectors, no stripes, nothing but blank pavement. We could not see curves or where the road was heading. Several times we found ourselves going off the road one way or the other. With the darkness and no lines to guide us we crawled along at 5-10 mile an hour in complete fear. The good news was that everyone else had gotten the word to stay off it in the dark, so we were in no fear of hitting someone. After a mile or so, we came to an exit and were able to get off and feel like we were safe again.
Often we feel like the people around us who are always correcting get on our nerves. Sometimes we even think God’s Word is a little too much about what we shouldn’t do. This event in my life helps me to understand how important the lines are to helping us stay safe. In the scriptures it tells us that the word is a lamp for our feet, and a light on your path. That night we NEEDED a light. We need to realize God uses His Word as a reflection of His very nature and helps keep us on the road instead of the ditch. We need God’s direction and instead of fighting it we should look for the lines that keep us safe and thank God that he has provided for us. Thank you Lord for your light!
